The Smoke Free Coalition of Seattle/King County partners with local businesses and employees like you to help smooth the transition to becoming a smoke-free establishment. We can help you plan and measure the impact of going smoke free and can connect you to others who have successfully made the switch.
About 80 percent of customers, including those who smoke, prefer to eat and drink in smoke-free establishments. Smoke free restaurants and bars make good business sense. Research shows that operating smoke free is what people want. It saves money and it saves lives.
Does your restaurant meet your customers' needs?
Most bar patrons prefer smoke-free bars. Two 2003 King County surveys [1,2] of 800 bar patrons (including 525 “regulars”) showed that:
Going smoke free helps reduce maintenance costs, caters to the majority of tenants and may help you negotiate lower insurance rates. Many real estate developers are beginning to make the switch and Public Health—Seattle and King County is helping make the transition easier.
A smoke-free policy is NOT discriminatory. As a landlord, you can play a role in eliminating a significant cause of illness in the home and a major cause of preventable death in the United States: secondhand smoke. In fact, non-smokers with serious breathing disabilities or smoke allergies actually have legal protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Act.
